This is exactly how I feel when I’m around people who like to watch sports.

Them: “Can you believe they suspended Tom Brady for deflating those footballs?”

Me: “Yeah. That’s cra— Do you think we could get NASA to let us borrow the wind tunnel to test the differential of the Reynolds number on an underinfla —zy. There’s no way Brady is at fault.

Them: “Who’s Reynold?”

Me: “Uh nobody…just some guy.”

Hover Text: [10 years later] Man, why are people so comfortable handing Google and Facebook control over our nuclear weapons?

People generally don’t do long term planning well. As a society and as a species we really suck at it.

At some point, it’s probably inevitable that we will create a truly artificial intelligent machine.1 This too may be the result of poor planning. On the other hand, giving control of our nuclear weapons to an AI capable of true long-term planning might be the best thing we could do.
